Figure of eight
The figure of eight is a simple but very effective stopper knot, it is quick and easy to tie and, in most circumstances, is also easily untied. It is used to prevent ropes passing back through something and is therefore extensively used by sailors to prevent sheets passing completely through pulleys and jamming cleats. The figure of eight can also be tied on a bight to form a very secure loop, something which is widely utilised by climbers.
