Weil's disease (Leptospirosis)
What is it?
Weil's Disease is caused by an organism which is present in many rivers, lakes and estuaries. There is a very small chance of catching the disease while taking part in water-based activities.
What are the symptoms?
The early symptoms of the disease are similar to influenza and include headache, temperature and joint or muscle pains.
What should I do?
If you fall ill with these symptoms, within three weeks of taking part in water activities, you should see a doctor immediately. Weil's Disease responds well to early treatment, left untreated it has occasionally proved fatal.
What precautions should I take?
Any cuts should be covered and sealed and you should wash your hands after taking part in any water activities. If you have any concerns you should talk to a Leader.
